Notre Dame CB Butler out 14-16 weeks with broken foot

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:53 p.m. ET

BRIDGMAN, Mich. (AP) Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly says cornerback Devin Butler will miss the beginning of the season with a broken left foot and could be out until October.

According to the South Bend Tribune, Kelly told reporters Monday at a golf outing in Bridgman, Michigan, that the 6-foot, 200-pound senior broke the same foot that caused him to miss playing against Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Kelly said Butler will have surgery next Monday and have another screw inserted into his foot.

Butler played in 12 of Notre Dame's 13 games last season, starting the regular-season finale against Stanford. He had 11 tackles, with two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He was expected to compete with Nick Watkins and Shaun Crawford for time playing opposite Cole Luke.
