S. Illinois 72, Austin Peay 65

Kendal Brown-Surles scored 15 points and Gene Teague had 13 as Southern Illinois defeated Austin Peay 72-65 Sunday in the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

John Freeman added 11 points and Mamadou Seck had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Salukis (1-2).

Tyshwan Edmondson led the Governors (2-2) with 19 points while Anthony Campbell scored 15.

Southern Illinois led by as many as nine in the first 20 minutes and went into intermission up 34-31 after Austin Peay closed the first half with an 8-2 run.

The Governors twice cut the deficit to one in the first three minutes of the second half. Teague answered with a field goal each time, and the Salukis maintain the lead for the rest of the game.

After Austin Peay pulled to within 63-61 with 2:29 to play, Southern Illinois put together a 9-2 run to secure the win.
