Fresh off a visit to the White House following his third national championship, UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun said he will decide in June whether to return for another season, SNY reported Wednesday.
The 69-year-old plans to make up his mind next month while on vacation with his family in Hilton Head, S.C.
"I think when I'm sitting there, maybe with my two sons or something, and we just start talking about some things," Calhoun said on how he plans to decide. "One of them (James) I know would like me to give it up. One of them (Jeff) would like me to stay."
But Calhoun, who has been a head coach since 1972 at Northeastern University, added he thinks it will take "an epiphany or an awakening or a realization of where I stand ... to make it clear."
If he chooses to return to Storrs for a 25th season with the Huskies, Calhoun will have to sit out the first three games of Big East play as a penalty for NCAA violations by the program.
Following his team's visit to the White House on Monday, where he spent about 15 minutes chatting privately with President Barack Obama in the Blue Room, Calhoun said UConn's incoming president, Susan Herbst, wants him to keep coaching.
"She wants me to stay for a couple years," Calhoun said. "She's already said that to me in a whole bunch of different ways, contractually and otherwise."
The Boston-area native has dealt with several health issues since 2003, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to have his prostate removed.
In 2008, Calhoun underwent surgery to remove a lump on the side of his neck that was found to be a form of skin cancer. And in 2010, the Hall of Fame coach missed seven games because of health issues that were reportedly stress-related.
