Maryland Basketball: Jake Layman has monster fourth quarter
Jake Layman hadn’t seen the floor over the early part of his rookie season in the NBA.
However, that all changed on Tuesday evening when the former Maryland star had a fourth quarter to remember. In just eight minutes, Layman scored 17 points (6-of-8) and had one assist, one rebound, and one steal in a 127-104 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
Layman was the highest scoring Portland Trail Blazer aside from star guard Damian Lillard who had 31 points. The Massachusetts native played the least amount of minutes on the team.

The Portland small forward was only the second player in NBA history to make five threes in his NBA debut. Donyell Marshall also achieved the feat in 1994 when he played for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Layman made five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc.
The former Terp entered the game with 8:00 to go and made three of his first four shots. Layman also connected on his first four attempts from three.
Layman hadn’t seen action in Portland’s first three regular season games. Maurice Harkless and Al-Farouq Aminu have seen the majority of the minutes at small forward early on this season.
However, Layman is clearly a big part of Portland’s future plans. After all, they gave up cash and a future second round pick to acquire Layman.
He was also given a guaranteed contract.
Layman certainly has an abundance of ability after his four years in College Park. Despite Tuesday’s performance being in garbage time, it was still an absolutely tremendous evening for one of the more special players to come through Maryland in recent years.
