Brown's 2 free throws lifts UAB past Alabama State, 72-70

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Robert Brown drained two free throws with three seconds left to lift Alabama-Birmingham to a 72-70 win over Alabama State in the Blazers home opener Monday night.

Chris Cokley, who was named Conference USA Player of the Week Monday for his 25-point, 12-rebound effort at Auburn, scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers. Tosin Mehinti added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

UAB (1-1) lost its opener at Auburn on a late 3-pointer. Alabama State beat Virginia Tech, 85-82, on Friday.

Torlorf Thomas tied the game at 70-70 with: 09 to play by converting three straight free throws.

Terrance LeFlore scored 16 points off the Hornets' bench and Corvon Butler added 13 points to lead Alabama State. Bobby Brown scored 11 points and Thomas and Jamel Waters added 10 points each.

UAB plays at Troy Thursday and return home Saturday to face Jacksonville State.
