Broken water main delays Terps-Hokies tipoff

The tipoff of Virginia Tech's basketball game against Maryland on Saturday has been delayed at least three hours because of a broken water main on campus.

The game will start at 7 p.m., three hours later than originally scheduled.

Tom Gabbard, Virginia Tech's associate athletic director for internal affairs, says a beer truck ran over a fire hydrant, fracturing a water line. He says when the main supply line was shut off in an effort to reroute the water, another line burst because of volume.

The broken lines include the one that flows into Cassell Coliseum, and school officials say they can't allow nearly 10,000 fans into a building with no water or working bathrooms.
