Appalachian State pulls away from Jacksonville 76-68

BOONE, N.C. (AP) Chris Burgess scored 18 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer, to lead Appalachian State to a 76-68 win over Jacksonville in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

Trailing late in the second half, Burgess hit the trey to put Appalachian State up 63-61 with 4:36 left and spark a 14-5 run to build a lead it would hold down the stretch. He was 6 of 9 from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Emarius Logan added 13 points and Michael Obacha had 11 and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers, who controlled the boards 54-34 and now are 2-0 against Jacksonville.

Marcel White led the Dolphins with 21 points and Darius Dawkins added 12.

Appalachian State was held to 37 percent shooting from the field but edged Jacksonville at the free throw line, hitting 20 of 30 compared to the Dolphins' 11 of 18.
