Rodgers reflects on ‘worst night’

Despite taking the lead through a fortunate own-goal, the Premier

League new-boys subsided to their League Two hosts in meek fashion.

Marvin Morgan levelled for Shrewsbury before Mark Wright and Nicky

Wroe struck in the second-half to send the hosts into round three

for the first time in 18 years. And Rodgers was not happy. “It is

my most disappointing night in football,” he said. “We are not good

enough to turn up anywhere and win a game at 70 per cent. “You need

the right mindset to do the ugly bits of football. “I have told the

players to make sure they remember the Manchester City game, when

they made their Premier League debuts, make sure they remember how

well they played against Wigan. “But don’t forget to tell their

grandchildren that they played against Shrewsbury and lost. That is

the reality. It shouldn’t happen.” The manner of defeat was a total

surprise to Rodgers, who made nine changes to his starting line-up,

but expected far better from those who represented his club. “A few

of them have put their hands up to say don’t pick me,” he observed.

“Some of them will get on the bus and think it is a game less. I

don’t think like that. I want to win every game. “Whether or not

the game wasn’t big enough for some players, I don’t know. “But we

had the top scorer from the Championship last season, international

players, experience. We were good enough. “I said before the game

that a team would be knocked out, a big team, and they would be

knocked out because their attitude wasn’t right. Ours wasn’t

right.” Shrewsbury’s veteran boss Graham Turner is too long in the

tooth to go overboard about a single success. However, he knows his

club’s supporters will await Saturday’s third round draw with keen

interest. “It would be nice for the chairman to get Manchester

United away. I would like anyone at home,” said Turner. “It is a

great result for the club. We had several seasons in the

Championship but it has been too many years in the lower leagues

now. “We deserved to get promoted last season. The aim has to be to

do it this season.”
