Lampard: England saved best performance till last

Frank Lampard believes England’s 5-1 win over Croatia at Wembley on Wednesday was their best performance of the group stages so far.

England vs. Croatia

Lampard helped himself to two goals as Fabio Capello’s men erased memories of the 3-2 defeat at the hands of Croatia almost two years ago, a result which ended England’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008, to book their place at next summer’s World Cup finals.

The Chelsea man was one of only three survivors from that team that took to the field on Wednesday, with Steven Gerrard – another who started that fateful night – also grabbing a brace.

Wayne Rooney capped off a performance that Lampard feels is up there with the best he has been involved in with England.

“It feels great. It’s what we set out to do, win all our games in the manner that we have done finishing off with tonight with our best performance is very special,” he told Sky Sports.

“After the lows of two years ago this is the highest really and it’s a moment to enjoy and after that I am hoping to keep working hard and improving and get better for the World Cup.”

Enjoy the moment

The 31-year-old is all too aware that there is still work to do before England can be classed amongst the favourites for the World Cup next summer but Lampard is keen to enjoy the moment.

“Even though it’s been a great campaign for us there is still more to do,” he added.

“With and without the ball we were top draw to beat a team like Croatia like we did so comfortably is some performance.

“We will keep a level head, it’s important the fans enjoy it, they should enjoy it because two years ago nobody enjoyed it so let’s enjoy it.”

The former West Ham youngster’s two goals took him to the 20-goal mark for England and he insisted he was keen to add to his impressive tally.

“I am pleased. The last two games have been very good to me. I have had a couple of penalties but you have to stick them away,” he highlighted.

“I am enjoying my football again for England and I am playing in a team that’s got such work rate and such quality in it I just want to keep enjoying it and keep going.”
