Dembele seeking a step up

The 22-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer of 2011 but

reports suggest the striker will be allowed to leave this summer in

order for the club to be able to command a sizeable fee. Dembele

told the AZ Alkmaar newsletter: “I think I can handle a higher

level. Barcelona is perhaps too high, but I am of Champions League

level.” Current AZ manager Dick Advocaat believes Arsenal would be

an ideal destination for Dembele with the north London side having

previously been linked with him. Dembele added: “He is very

experienced, so that statement says it all. But even without that

opinion I have enough confidence in my own abilities.” However, the

former Willem II attacker freely admits he has developed a lot at

AZ, saying: “Especially under Louis Van Gaal, I learned a lot. “The

development that I’ve made would not have been greater at another

club. “But now both the club and for me the time to take leave of

each other. ”
