Super Bowl XLVII was a matchup of the AFC Champion Denver Broncos versus the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks defeated the Broncos 43-8, giving Seattle their first Super Bowl victory ever and the fifth Super Bowl loss for Denver. The game was played on February 2, 2014, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith, who returned a 69-yard interception for a touchdown, recovered a fumble and made nine tackles, was named Super Bowl MVP. Total game attendance was 82,529, and the halftime show was performed by Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Broncos were two-point favorites.

The Seattle Seahawks, led by second year quarterback Russell Wilson and league leading defense, finished the season with a 13-3 record, winning the NFC West division and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Denver Broncos, led by MVP quarterback Peyton Manning, finished the season 13–3, winning the AFC West division and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Broncos had the best offense in the NFL, leading the league in points scored (606, the highest total in NFL history). The Seahawks had the NFL’s top defense, leading the league in yards allowed per game (273.6), points allowed (231), and most takeaways (39). This was the first time since 2003 that the Super Bowl matchup featured the league’s top offense against the league’s top defense.

On the first play from scrimmage, the Seahawks defense scored a safety, the quickest score in Super Bowl history. The next two scores were Seahawks field goals by Steven Hauschka. In the second quarter, Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch scored a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a Malcom Smith 69-yard interception return for touchdown, giving Seattle a 22-0 lead at halftime. This was the third-largest halftime deficit in Super Bowl history. Seattle continued to add to their lead in the third quarter, with a Jermaine Kearse 23-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson. Denver was finally able to get on the board at the end of the quarter, with Peyton Manning throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas, followed by a Wes Welker two point conversion reception. Demaryius Thomas ended the game with a Super Bowl record 13 receptions. The final score of the game was a 10-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to wide receiver Doug Baldwin.
