2027 Driver Lineup Update: Few Empty Seats Remaining
The 2027 NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver lineup is still taking shape.
Realistically, three seats need to be resolved by their respective teams, although officially there are four such seats open until Juncos Hollinger Racing confirms Rinus VeeKay’s expected return. The driver of the team’s second car also needs to be announced.
Dale Coyne Racing has not confirmed either of its drivers for next season. Earlier this week, the team tested INDY NXT by Firestone champion Nikita Johnson (photo, top) and Formula 2 race winner Alex Dunne at Barber Motorsports Park. Johnson, a Floridian, won two INDY NXT races in the recently completed season; Dunne, an Irishman, ranks third in F2’s standings with two races remaining.
AJ Foyt Racing resolved its No. 4 Chevrolet earlier this week by announcing INDY NXT race winner Josh Pierson. He will be paired with 2026 Rookie of the Year Dennis Hauger, the 2025 INDY NXT champion, who will drive the No. 14 entry.
The driver changes for 2027 are highlighted by six-time series champion Scott Dixon and reigning Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Felix Rosenqvist moving to Arrow McLaren. They take the place of Christian Lundgaard, who has replaced Dixon at Chip Ganassi Racing, and Nolan Siegel, who has not yet landed a seat for next year.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing will drop from three cars to two in 2027 after Dreyer & Reinbold Racing purchased one of its charters. DRR will be a full-season team for the first time since 2012, and it will do so with Conor Daly driving its Honda-powered car in a technical alliance with RLL (photo, above).
Overall, 10 of the 25 seats are changing hands, up from seven seat changes a year ago.
Mick Schumacher’s move from RLL to Meyer Shank Racing is the series’ other change. He will be paired with Marcus Armstrong, who recently signed a new contract and will move to the team’s No. 60 entry that Rosenqvist occupied each of the past three seasons.
One seat that hasn’t changed is the one the field again figures to be chasing. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou will seek his series-record fifth consecutive season championship and sixth title in seven years. However, he will do so with a new engineer following the retirement of veteran Julian Robertson. Robertson’s successor has not yet been named.
The 2027 season begins Sunday, March 7 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. All 17 races will air live on FOX.
