He started on pole before ultimately being overmatched by a dominant Alex Palou for the win, but he clawed back second place with an overtake of Kyle Kirkwood on Lap 94. McLaughlin has finished inside the top five in three of his five starts at St. Petersburg, so next weekend's race at Phoenix could provide more insight into whether he and Team Penske have truly improved form relative to 2025.
