Want to know why individual awards are bogus?

Northern Ireland's Will Grigg got the exact number of votes as Juventus star Paul Pogba in the first round of voting for UEFA's Best Player in Europe award.

That is not a joke. Journalists from all 55 UEFA member associations were asked to name their five best players of the 2015/16 season, and somehow, Will Grigg – he of the viral fan song sensation "Will Grigg's On Fire," but who didn't play a single minute at Euro 2016 – received as much love as the guy who just powered France to the final, led Juventus to a fifth straight Scudetto, and earned himself a reported £100-million price tag.

This is why you can't have nice things, UEFA.

Grigg and Pogba were tied for 25th out of 37 players receiving votes, ahead of names like Africa's reigning player of the year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne.

The top ten players who made the shortlist are, in alphabetical order:

No players from the Premier League made the first cut, with Leicester City's Rijad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy coming in 11th and 12th, respectively.

A second round of voting will take place in early August to whittle it down to three finalists, with the winner being announced ahead of the Champions League group stage draw on August 25.
