Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:24 p.m. ET

Last week, Oklahoma back-up quarterback Trevor Knight said he is considering transferring.

This week, Knight was dropped to third on the quarterback depth chart while Cody Thomas was promoted to second string behind Baker Mayfield.

Coach Bob Stoops made the announcement Wednesday. Knight asked for, and was granted a full release, allowing him to have contact with other schools. He's been in touch with Oregon, Kansas State, Georgia and SMU.

Knight lost his starting job to Mayfield before the start of this season. His most-extensive action this season came in the second half of OU's last home game against TCU. Knight was just 5-of-16 passing for 76 yards and an interception.

Thomas is a sophomore from Colleyville, Texas. He started three games last season when Knight was injured. In eight game for his career, Thomas has completed just 46 percent of his passes, has two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has 23 total carries for 141 yards.

Stoops said Knight is still practicing hard and has a good spirit.

"He's fabulous," Stoops told The Oklahoman. "That's the point. Trevor still comes to work with a great attitude every day, is excited, works hard, players all respect him appreciate him. He's been a great team guy."
