Bruins rookie Frank Vatrano hits speed bump after suffering injury against Wild

Published Nov. 20, 2015 12:02 p.m. ET

The feel-good story of Boston Bruins rookie sensation Frank Vatrano appears to have hit a speed bump, as the 21-year-old suffered an upper-body injury in Thursday's game against the Minnesota Wild and did not return to the game.

The injury occurred nearly halfway through the second period of Thursday's game. Vatrano was taking a puck into the offensive zone when Minnesota's Nate Prosser checked Vatrano into the end boards on a clean hit. Vatrano went into the boards sideways and was slow to get up.

Bruins coach Claude Julien told reporters after the game that Vatrano suffered an upper-body injury but did not provide additional information. The situation seems at least somewhat serious, however, as Vatrano was absent from practice Friday morning.

The rookie had been held without a point in the five games since scoring a goal in his NHL debut against the Canadiens on Nov. 7.
