NFL says Julius Thomas' hit on Cardinals' Calais Campbell was illegal

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians was livid after his team’s loss to the Broncos on Sunday because of a block that he called “dirtiest play I've ever seen in the National Football League,” and now the NFL has weighed in.

According to USA Today, NFL spokesman Michael Signora in an email said that the block tight end Julius Thomas landed on defensive end Calais Campbell was a penalty as he was hit in the area of the thigh or lower while left tackle Ryan Clady hit Campbell high.

Arians called for a lengthy suspension to match the several games Cambpell will likely miss with an MCL injury.

"I know (Denver coach) John Fox and he's a great coach and a great guy, but somebody has got to answer to that,” Arians said after the game. “A fine isn't going to do it when (Calais is) going to miss three to four weeks on a blatant chop block."
