Media power rankings: Week 5

A common theme around the media during the early part of the week is power rankings. Whether they are ranking college football teams, baseball teams, basketball teams, or NFL teams it is something that most major outlets do.

ESPN and NFL.com are no different, and they are the two that I pay the most attention to during the week. They generally use either a composite ranking to get their list, or they have someone assigned to watch every game before they make their list.

With other sites, there is a lot of guess work and assumptions that become pretty clear by around Week 8 and I have no intention of using them in these articles.

So, let’s take a look at how those two sites ranked the Tennessee Titans in their power rankings.

NFL.com: 26 (28)

“Every week in the NFL, there is a win that flies under the radar — lost among the big-market teams, lost among wide receiver temper tantrums, lost among Dak/Wentz mania. This past weekend’s nominee: Those pesky little Titans taking it to the Dolphins in Miami. Tennessee has been in every game. Maybe could have won at Houston in Week 4. Right now, though, fresh off a road win, the Titans are one game back of those Texans. With 235 rushing yards Sunday, still feeling confident about that bold prediction back in July.”

The prediction that he is talking about is that he said the Tennessee Titans will lead the NFL in rushing yards, which is a strong guess since right now they are 2nd in the NFL behind the Dallas Cowboys.

Maybe if the Tennessee Titans can end up ahead earlier in games or if they can use Marcus Mariota on the edge more, this team can jump them.

ESPN: 26 (27)

“Mike Mularkey is 20-42 (.323) in his career as a head coach, but he’s 2-3 this season. Why is this significant? He hasn’t won more than two games in a season as a head coach since 2005, when his Bills went 5-11. A home game against the Browns is as good a chance as any to get that magical third win.”

I am not a big believer in past coaching wins translating to future failure, hell Bill Belichick was 36-44 in his time in Cleveland when he had a coaching staff full of future GMs, Nick Saban, Kirk Ferentz, and several head coaches at the NFL and NCAA level.

However, the second stat is important. He is 2-3 this season, and that number could look a lot better after these next four weeks where the Tennessee Titans play the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and San Diego Chargers. A foursome that has just a 4-15 record this season.
