Utah Jazz Land at No. 7 in ESPN's Power Rankings

The Utah Jazz continue to get love from the national sporting press, showing up at No. 7 in ESPN’s training camp power rankings.

ESPN posted the training camp edition of their NBA power rankings as compiled by senior hoops writer Marc Stein on Friday. For much of the summer, the Utah Jazz have shown well in these kinds of rankings. But are Stein and ESPN still on-board with the Jazz hype train?

The answer, it seems, is a resounding yes.

The Jazz came in at No. 7 in the Worldwide Leader’s camp rankings, just below the Boston Celtics at No. 6 and one spot better than the eighth-ranked Memphis Grizzlies. LeBron James and the world champion Cleveland Cavaliers topped the rankings, followed by the Golden State Warriors at No. 2 and the San Antonio Spurs at No. 3.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors round out the Top 5.

Also of note for the #BeatLA contingent of Jazz Nation is the Kobe Bryant-less Los Angeles Lakers bringing up the rear as the conference’s lowest-ranked team at No. 28 overall.

Stein shared the following thoughts about the Jazz and their spot in the rankings–

Folks tend to forget just how consistently good Utah was for the better part of two decades with that Karl Malone-John Stockton-Jerry Sloan foundation, but I’m not sure I’ve ever been more intrigued by a Jazz team than this one. Adding Joe Johnson, Boris Diaw and George Hill, along with a healed Dante Exum, to what the Jazz already had makes them the scariest of the West’s up-and-comers.

While I can’t fully get behind the “more intriguing than Malone-Stockton-Sloan” notion, it’s hard to argue with Stein’s assessment that the Jazz are one of the West’s scariest teams.

With exceptional length at every position, stars on both sides of the ball and newfound depth, the team is primed to return to the playoffs this season following a four-year postseason drought.
