Utah Jazz Announce More Basketball Staff Promotions
After finalizing their coaching staff earlier this week, the Utah Jazz have announced two more basketball staff promotions and a new hire.
If you’ve watched Utah Jazz basketball at any point in the last, oh…two decades, you’ve probably seen Richard Smith. The man they call “Smitty” has been with the team for more than 22 years in a variety of capacities. Dating back to the days of John Stockton and Karl Malone, Smith could often be spotted sitting behind the Jazz bench.
On Tuesday, Smith was one of three members of the team’s basketball staff to get new gigs according to an announcement from the team.
Smith and Bart Taylor have both been promoted to new posts within the Jazz organization. Meanwhile, the team has also hired Nixon Dorvilien to a newly created position.

For the last three years, Smith served as the Jazz executive director of player services. Now he’ll transition to the role of executive director of international scouting. His duties will include spearheading the team’s global scouting efforts.
As for Taylor, the team’s former scouting coordinator takes on a new role as both the director of scouting, as well as V.P. of basketball operations for the Salt Lake City Stars. Performing in a dual role, he’ll coordinate the Jazz’s scouting efforts while also directing all basketball decisions for the team’s D-League affiliate.
Now in his fifth year in Utah, Taylor previously served basketball operations internships with the San Antonio Spurs.
More from Purple and Blues
Dorvilien comes to the Jazz after having spent the last two years with the Milwaukee Bucks, most recently as head athletic trainer. He’ll work with the team’s medical and sports science staffs on injury prevention, recovery and return to optimal performance as director of rehabilitation.
In addition to his time in Milwaukee, Dorvilien spent time with the Brooklyn Nets and the Spurs.
The Jazz also announced promotions within the coaching staff earlier this week.
