The Atlanta Hawks Request Waivers On Will Bynum

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Atlanta Hawks continue to trim their roster as the regular season opener approaches. They’ve requested waivers on Will Bynum.

Just one day after waiving 11-year veteran point guard Jarrett Jack, the Atlanta Hawks have announced they’ve also requested waivers on point guard Will Bynum. The roster now stands at 16 players.

When the news came out about Jack, there was some room for reason to believe that Bynum may have a shot of making the final roster. Minutes-wise, he was hit-or-miss this preseason with the team, but averaged 13.5 minutes through seven games. He ended up recording 4.7 points and 3.1 assists per game.

This leaves the Hawks with two point guards remaining on the roster in Dennis Schroder and Malcolm Delaney. Jack seemed to fit the mold of being the perfect veteran to help teach both players, but it’s likely that his recovery was taking longer than expected.

There’s no definitive answer of whether or not they will go searching for another point guard once other teams finalize their rosters. The scary part of all this right now is that if Schroder or Delaney get injured, they’ll likely have to rely on DeAndre Bembry to play a ton of minutes at the position. Bembry has shown his basketball IQ ever since being picked in this year’s draft, but to throw him in at point guard in emergency situations could backfire.

With the current roster at 16, the Hawks will need to make one more decision in order to get to the final number of 15. Josh Maggette is the only player remaining that doesn’t have a guaranteed contract.

All indications point to Maggette being the next player to be waived. He has appeared in just three games and has totals of five assists, three points, and three rebounds and didn’t play in the team’s preseason finale on Thursday.
