Take Your Best Shot: Garrett Temple

This article takes a look at the offensive game of Garrett Temple to examine his best shot to thwart NBA defenders. This is the next installment in our Take Your Best Shot series.

This offseason, the Sacramento Kings added guard depth by acquiring Garrett Temple in free agency. They agreed to a contract for 3 years and $24 million. I wrote an article here about if Temple was worth that contract if you are interested in my thoughts.

Now let us examine Temple’s offensive game to find where he takes his most effective shot.

Temple’s Best Shot

Garrett Temple has been a career back-up and not an aggressive shooter, so let us look at his career shooting numbers for a larger sample size. Below is his career shot chart courtesy of NBASavant.com.

As you can see, Temple shoots below league average from every spot on the floor except one. Temple converts his right corner 3’s at 0.5% better than league average. Clearly, that is his most efficient shot, but let us examine some further numbers to see if Temple can be effective in other areas.

According to Basketball-Reference, the numbers do not look any better. Not unexpected for a career 39.3% shooter from the field, but I uncovered one interesting tidbit. Temple is a career 37.8% corner 3 point shooter. That is slightly below league average, but effective especially for a player who shoots just over that from anywhere on the floor. The Kings struggled from beyond the arc last season (19th in the NBA in 3 pointers made), so Temple is a great addition to boost those aggregate 3 pointers. Summary

The Sacramento Kings added Garrett Temple to their team this offseason. Temple struggles from the field on offense but brings effective corner 3 point shooting. His most effective shot is right corner 3’s. The Kings need to find ways to get Temple open in the corners, so he can produce. Temple always brings good defense and should be a welcomed addition to Sacramento without producing any offense. Enjoy the dump down to the big men and then kick out to Temple to splash a corner 3 this season. Hopefully, it is a common occurrence.
