Report: Warriors possibly offered Barnes and Green for Love last summer

Published Jun. 9, 2015 11:32 a.m. ET

Last summer, the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves discussed a possible trade that would've sent Kevin Love to the Bay Area and Klay Thompson to Minnesota. It was a controversial and fascinating proposal that never happened because the Warriors ultimately refused to part with their star shooting guard.

Timberwolves president and head coach Flip Saunders wouldn't give up Love unless he got Thompson, and reportedly may have turned down a pretty sweet package in the process. Here's Grantland's Zach Lowe with more:

"The Warriors might have offered David Lee, Harrison Barnes, and Draymond Green for Love—there is some debate about that now—but talks never got that far, since everyone involved understood that Saunders wouldn’t listen to any deal that didn’t include Thompson. 'Nothing else ever got off the ground,' says Warriors GM Bob Myers. 'Flip is a pretty straight shooter.'”

At the time this deal would've been a joke, but knowing what we know now (that Green is a max player and Barnes could be on his way to earning something close to it), this would've been a tremendous haul for the Timberwolves.

That said, is it better than their current situation? With Andrew Wiggins and the 2015 first overall pick? Probably not.
