Report: Paul Pierce to make decision on 2015-16 status in a few weeks

Published Jun. 9, 2015 12:41 p.m. ET

Washington Wizards forward Paul Pierce has a tough decision ahead this offseason. Pierce has a player option worth $5.5 million that he can either accept or decline. If he chooses to decline his option, Pierce will be free to sign with any team on a new deal.

It's also possible that Pierce will decide to retire altogether. Pierce, 37, has played in 17 NBA seasons and has logged more than 50,000 combined regular-season and playoff minutes.

Here's Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post with more:

"Pierce said he’s going on vacation to Mexico with his family next week, where they’ll discuss his options and figure out 'the best way to move forward.' He said he should know something 'in the next couple weeks,' which is good, since he has until the end of June to opt in for his $5.5 million player option. He said his body is only now starting to heal from the past season, and that he still has 'some bumps and bruises.' "
