Philadelphia 76ers: Robert Covington Sprained Ankle

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Robert Covington is adding to the Philadelphia 76ers injury issues, spraining his ankle in the team’s final preseason game in Miami.

The injury issues just will not stop for the Philadelphia 76ers. The regular season doesn’t tip off for the team for another three days, but the team has already seen its fair share of injuries for seemingly an entire season.

First up was Ben Simmons a few weeks ago, who fractured his fifth metatarsal in his foot (also known as a Jones fracture).

Then came the growing suspicion that Jahlil Okafor still was not fully recovered as he appeared in just five minutes of preseason action (in the final game on Friday).

Nerlens Noel needs minor surgery to repair his knee, something that will likely keep him out for at least a month.

Jerryd Bayless has a wrist issue that the team is going to try to avoid operating on, but that may not be an option the team has. They are re-evaluating him in two weeks.

And now, Robert Covington adds to the mess. In the team’s final preseason game on Friday in Miami, Covington sprained his ankle.

Sprained ankles are so common in basketball, so this really shouldn’t be a huge issue, but there is a chance that it could keep Covington out for a few weeks, depending on how major of a sprain it is. With the Sixers set to open their season on Wednesday night, there’s a good chance that Covington will sit that out.

Covington has been one of the team’s best 3-point shooters over the past few seasons, so him missing any time is notable. He has a 36.3 percent success rate from beyond the arc over the course of his career, with his best season being the 2014-15 season with a rate of 37.5 percent.

This season, fans and the team have high hopes for Covington. It would be great to see him turn into a solid 3-and-D player that can help the Sixers lower their opponents 3-point makes, but with him starting the season out with an injury, he’s not starting off in the most ideal of situations.
