NBA player Ty Lawson gets probation for Denver DUI case

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:47 p.m. ET

DENVER (AP) Indiana Pacers point guard Ty Lawson will serve a year of probation in a Denver drunken driving case after a judge rejected arguments that he needed to serve time in jail to learn a lesson.

The former Denver Nuggets player was arrested twice on drunken driving charges last year - first in Denver, then in Los Angeles. He also has two previous DUI arrests that don't count as prior offenses, including one when he was underage.

A prosecutor on Tuesday asked for Lawson to spend at least a month in jail because his behavior hasn't changed. His lawyer said no one else would be put behind bars for a first conviction.

Judge Olympia Fay agreed but warned Lawson that he needed to change before he or someone else got hurt.
