NBA owners reportedly expected to pass measure allowing ads on jerseys

If you like NBA jerseys without ads, you better start buying them as soon as possible. ESPN reported Tuesday that NBA owners are expected to green light putting ads on jerseys for the 2017-18 season.

According to the report, the ads will be placed in a 2.5-by-2.5-inch patch on the left shoulder. The proposal is expected to pass at the Board of Governors meeting, which will be held Thursday and Friday in New York. If the proposal passes, teams will keep 50 percent of the money from the jersey ads while the other 50 percent will be added to a revenue-sharing pool for all teams.

The NBA has been leaning toward jersey ads for a few years now. At last year's All-Star Game, players' jerseys had a small Kia decal on the left shoulder. During All-Star Saturday night, the jerseys had a Foot Locker ad on the right shoulder.

Commissioner Adam Silver has signaled this change was coming for some time.

"Exactly when it's going to come, I'm not sure, but I do think it's inevitable in our sport," Silver said last season.

"Mainly because I travel so much and I see the model work so successfully here. I think that as we look to generate other forms of revenue and also as we listen to the marketplace, the companies that are involved with the NBA want to get closer to the game, want to get closer to our players."
