LeBron reports for jury duty

Published Aug. 8, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

UPDATE: According to the Akron Beacon Journal, James — shockingly — was not selected for a trial and left the Summit County Courthouse at about 10:30 a.m. ET.

Original story follows:

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and jury duty — and the latter even applies when you’re the world’s best basketball player.

On Thursday morning, LeBron James answered the call to do his civic duty and report to the local courthouse to sit in a jury pool, according to a photo posted to his Instagram account:

The photo came along with the caption, "Jury duty time. Time to serve my civic duty."

LeBron isn’t the first prominent hoops star to be assigned jury duty. In 2009, Kobe Bryant showed up and was later excused from jury duty in Santa Ana, Calif.

Said Bryant, at the time: "Everyone has to do their duty … This is important. You have to take it seriously. I don’t think anybody wants to do jury duty, but it’s your responsibility.”

Something tells me LeBron’s stay in the jury pool will be as short-lived as Kobe’s, but the idea of him being picked to serve is certainly funny to think about, and it’s good to see him showing up. Contempt charges are no joke.
