Draymond Green voices support for protests

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Warriors’ star Draymond Green took to Twitter to voice his support for the national anthem protests and his respect for Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross.

Draymond Green has become the third Golden State Warriors player to openly support the protests led by NFL players. The protests, during the national anthem, were started by San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Stephen Curry first said that he “applauded” Kaepernick then Kevin Durant said he stands behind him.

Green wasn’t asked about it like Curry and Durant were. Instead, he took to Twitter to express his support. Kaepernick’s 49ers didn’t play on Sunday, but many players around the league–including several Miami Dolphins–took a knee during the national anthem.

Here’s what Green had to say late Sunday night.

The Steve Ross he’s talking about is the owner of the Miami Dolphins. After some of his players took a knee, Ross publicly supported them. He said he applauded the players for having an important conversation.

RISE is a non-profit organization started by the multi-billionaire. It stands for “Ross Initiative for Sports for Equality.”  Their mission statement says they are “dedicated to promoting understanding, respect and equality. Our goal is to harness the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress.”

Green is not afraid of saying what’s on his mind. As a legitimate star in the NBA, he also understands how much his voice resonates. He’s no stranger to controversy and, for many, fighting injustices and racism is not a worthy fight. But clearly, he’s comfortable supporting the cause.

As more Warriors speak out, it looks like it’s very possible that the team comes together and stands with Kaepernick, the Miami Dolphins, soccer star Megan Rapinoe, and others in this fight.
