David West enters familiar territory vs Spurs in opener

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

There will be plenty of familiar moments for David West against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.

The San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors will begin the NBA regular season on Tuesday night. It’s hard to believe that basketball season is just a day away, but that is where we currently are. Both teams come into the game with plenty of new faces, but there’s one new face that is a familiar face, David West.

West spent last season with the Spurs after a long stay with the Indiana Pacers. West was an effective player for the Spurs off the bench and was one of many veteran pieces for them. Now, he joins the Warriors, where he will play his old team in the opener.

While that’s just one of the familiar things for West in the opener, the way he approaches it should be nothing new for him. He went through this same process last season in San Antonio. He joined a contender that had a great shot at a ring.

It can be a bit difficult for an aging vet to make that adjustment as they begin a different career path, but West is still on that path to a ring. The jersey he will be wearing is new, but his mindset is very much the same and his experience with the Spurs should serve him well.

He’s playing in another system that is one of the best in the league and for a coach that is one of the best as well. The transition period should be flawless for him. He’s a smart guy and he knows his role on the team. Expect that role to pay dividends early and maybe against San Antonio.
