Cavaliers sign point guard Toney Douglas

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 10:46 p.m. ET

CLEVELAND (AP) The Cavaliers have signed veteran point guard Toney Douglas to address a lack of experienced depth at the position.

Douglas played 61 games with New Orleans last season, averaging 8.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 20.7 minutes. He'll compete for a backup job behind Kyrie Irving.

The defending NBA champion Cavs were in the market for a point guard after Mo Williams retired last week. Rookie Kay Felder was the only other point guard in training camp.

Douglas was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 29 overall pick in 2009. He's been with six teams in seven years.

The Cavs also waived forward/center Eric Moreland.

Meanwhile, the Cavs remain at an impasse with free agent starting guard J.R. Smith.
