Beno Udrih waived by Heat in move designed to avoid tax

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:35 p.m. ET

MIAMI (AP) Guard Beno Udrih was waived Monday by the Miami Heat, a move that could help the team get back under the luxury-tax threshold.

Udrih had surgery to repair a foot injury last week, and is expected to need three months to recover. If he is claimed by another team by Wednesday, the Heat would have the flexibility to add another player in the coming days and still remain below the tax line.

If Udrih is unclaimed, a buyout would likely take effect.

Miami made a series of trade-deadline moves to get under the tax line in an effort to avoid paying the highly punitive repeater penalty. Signing Joe Johnson after he was waived by Brooklyn last week pushed them back over, necessitating the Udrih move.
