Size matters, especially when it pertains to spoilers in NASCAR
Size matters. Always has, always will, especially in NASCAR.
Last year at Michigan International Speedway, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars ran mammoth 9-inch rear spoilers.
This time around, the rear spoilers are only 2½-inches tall and narrower, too
When combined with a smaller splitter, there's about 500 pounds of downforce taken off the cars, which makes for faster straightaway speeds, slower cornering speeds and slightly reduced lap times.
But as Wood Brothers Racing co-owner Eddie Wood reminded us, that's still a bigger spoiler than they used to run here. Wood should know. NASCAR Hall of Fame driver David Pearson leads all drivers with nine victories at MIS, eight of them in Wood Brothers cars.
