Practice 1 results: Rain ends opening Homestead-Miami Speedway practice session

Published Nov. 20, 2015 1:25 p.m. ET

Carl Edwards led Friday’s only round of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice in advance of Sunday’s season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Edwards, who narrowly missed advancing to the Championship 4 Round when last Sunday’s race got cut short at Phoenix International Raceway, lapped the 1.5-mile Homestead track at 175.143 miles per hour in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

“Last week was tough. It made me feel physically sick when they ended that race, because I know how good we are here,” said Edwards, who has two victories and two poles at Homestead.

The practice was scheduled for 85 minutes, but was shortened to about 55 minutes because of rain.

Results for the four drivers in championship contention were mixed: Martin Truex Jr. was third behind Edwards and Brad Keselowski. Kevin Harvick, the defending race winner and series champion, was good but not great in seventh place.

But Kyle Busch was 16th, and Jeff Gordon was all the way back in 30th.

Sprint Cup qualifying is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET, weather permitting.
