The Tampa Bay Rays are making a preseason trip to Cuba, becoming the first team since 1999 to visit the country. Rays outfielder Dayron Varona defected from Cuba in 2013, fleeing to Haiti before signing a minor-league deal with the Rays last year at the age of 27.

Varona was invited to join the Rays for Spring Training despite not being not the official major league roster, allowing him to reunite with family members he hasn't seen for years.
