Giants pitch eight shutouts in May

The Giants didn’t finish the month of May with another shutout, and that was surprising. Over the weekend, Giants pitchers’ 39-inning home scoreless streak came to end. After shutting out the Dodgers for three consecutive games in their previous homestand and then shutting out the Braves on Thursday, the streak ended in the third inning on Friday. The streak matched a franchise record set by the 1948 New York Giants. On Saturday, Tim Lincecum’s own 23-inning home scoreless streak ended.
The Giants actually pitched eight shutouts in May. Jayson Stark of ESPN points out that only three other teams have had eight shutouts in one month since 1969: the 1974 Orioles, 1988 Dodgers and 2013 Dodgers. What makes the Giants’ eight shutouts even more unique, however, is the fact that they have all happened at home. Stark notes that the last team to pitch at least eight shutouts at home was the 1916 New York Giants who had 10.
