Mike London out at Virginia; Who will replace him?

Published Nov. 29, 2015 10:36 a.m. ET

Mike London is out after six seasons at Virginia. Despite what had been some highly rated recruiting classes, he was 14-34 in the ACC. His Cavalier teams had an overall record of 27-46. London was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2011 after guiding UVA to the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Another big factor in his dismissal according to a source was the fact that attendance for UVA games had plummeted.

The UVA coaching job is considered in the upper half of Power 5 jobs by many coaches FOX Sports has spoken to this fall. It's in a strong recruiting area, has decent resources, is in a very favorable half of the ACC (the Coastal) and the next coach will inherit some talented players that London is leaving behind. Four candidates expected to get some consideration for the vacancy:

Former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano, who is well-regarded for the way he built the RU program, developing talent and for his extremely strong academic rep. Schiano also is in the mix for the Miami coaching vacancy.

Temple head coach Matt Rhule, a 40-year-old who has led Temple to a 10-2 season and improved the Owls significantly in each of his three seasons. Rhule is also a strong candidate for a few vacancies, including at Mizzou, according to sources.

Former Miami head coach Al Golden, who spent five seasons as UVA's DC under Al Groh and also had been a grad assistant under George Welsh. Golden was not a great fit at UM, but he's known for his organizational skills and would seem more comfortable back at Virginia.

Air Force’s Troy Calhoun, a 49-year-old former NFL offensive coordinator whose team beat both Boise State and Jim McElwain’s Colorado State program last year and has won 18 games the past two years despite dealing with the Academy’s strict restrictions.
