Freshman Lock making a name for himself at Mizzou
True freshman quarterback Drew Lock is making some waves in Columbia.
A native of Lee's Summit, Mo., Lock has leapfrogged returning players Eddie Printz and Marvin Zanders as the second-string signal-caller behind starter Maty Mauk. With head coach Gary Pinkel's proclivity for playing two quarterbacks, it looks like Lock may see time time in 2015.
Mauk was particularly effusive in his praise of his backup.
"[Lock] is a great quarterback, thats why he's here. He's going to keep getting better, and it's going to be a process. But for him, how he's come from day 1 to right now is unbelievable. He's going to be ready to play."
Per Joe Walljasper of the Columbia Daily Tribune, Lock threw for 484 yards and four touchdowns in three preseason scrimmages. He was victimized by only one interception, and completed passes at a 74.5-percent clip.
Going forward, it will be fascinating to see whether Mauk's job will be in jeopardy or not as the season progresses. Missouri's returning starter at the position was plagued at times by inconsistency and accuracy issues. While Lock looked good in practice, it's a whole other animal to be successful when the proverbial bullets are flying during SEC conference play.
Regardless, it appears as if Missouri has its quarterback of the future.
