LeDay Leads Hokies With a Big Day

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Zach LeDay once again was the man in charge for the Hokies off the bench.

Zach LeDay finished with 23 points and has scored in double figures in seven of the eight games this season and 36 times in his Virginia Tech career. It is his third 20-point game of the season and the 12th if his Virginia Tech career.

Buzz Williams, Hokies head coach has taken notice to LeDay and his leadership.

“I think, so far, maybe a little bit even bleeding into the end of last year, when things are haywire they’re going to throw the ball to Zach,” said Williams. “He’s going to score, he’s going to get fouled but he also does a good job of finding the next guy.”

LeDay wasn’t the only guy doing the damage for the Hokies as Seth Allen stepped up in the 75-59 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

Allen had a season-high eight assists in the game. It’s the third time this season he has registered at least five assists in a game. The eight assists ties his career-high at Virginia Tech, set last season at Notre Dame. Allen also scored 11 points, his fifth double-figure scoring game of the season.

Virginia Tech’s defense has also made strides. During the game the Hokies debuted a man press defense in which caused a lot of confusion for the Hawks offensively.

“I think it’s just part of how our team is trying to morph and trying to evolve. I would say the timing of introducing it was probably right,” Williams said on the press defense. “You have to be careful, right, three games in four days. I don’t know that you want to do it in your first road game. The timing was right.”

UMES standout Robert Andino made seven three-point field goals, tying the opponent record in Cassell Coliseum. Miami’s Darius Rice made seven three-pointers against the Hokies in 2001.

The Hokies are now 7-0 all-time against the Hawks. Tech recorded assists on 19 of its 26 made baskets. That marks the fourth time this season the Hokies recorded at least 19 assists in a game.

Johnny Hamilton did not dress again for the Hokies and Williams wasn’t holding back when asked why Hamilton wasn’t dressed out.

“He didn’t earn it,” Williams said.

Virginia Tech will now prepare to host Ole Miss who is 6-2 on the season. The game will be televised on ESPNU with a tip time scheduled for 12 noon.
