Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930, after winning gold at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics. The country’s reign as the world’s best remained intact with a 4-2 victory over Argentina in the final. In 20 World Cups, the host nation has won six times.

20 years later, Uruguay’s second World Cup was another resounding success. The team traveled to nearby Brazil and ultimately defeated the host country 2-1 in the final.

Uruguay wasn’t able to add a third championship in 1954. The tournament began with a 2-0-0 record in the Group Stage and a Quarter-finals win over England, but ended with losses to Hungary in the Semi-finals and Austria in the third-place game.

For the first time, Uruguay failed to advance to the knockout stage. The team defeated Colombia but lost to Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union for a record of 1-0-2 in the Group Stage.
After a win and two ties in the Group Stage, Uruguay was outmatched in the Quarter-finals, falling to eventual runner-up West Germany by a score of 4-0.

Despite scoring just four goals at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, Uruguay still reached the third-place game, losing 1-0 to West Germany. Uruguay’s Semi-finals loss was to eventual champion Brazil.
A 1-1 tie with Bulgaria was the only positive outcome from Uruguay’s 1974 World Cup showing. In games against the Netherlands and Sweden, Uruguay failed to score, while allowing five total goals.

A streak of four consecutive World Cup appearances came to an end 1978, when Uruguay did not qualify. The team was back in 1986 and managed to reach the knockout round even with a -5 goal differential in the Group Stage. Eventual champ Argentina defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the Round of 16.
A 1-1-1 record in group play proved enough to advance to the knockout round, but Uruguay had the unfortunate circumstance of matching up with the host country, Italy, and fell 2-0 in the Round of 16.

Uruguay just missed the cut for the knockout round in 2002, finishing the group stage with a 0-2-1 record. The results included a loss to Denmark and ties against France and Senegal.

The 2010 World Cup turned back the clock for Uruguay, as the team achieved its best finish in 40 years. After winning its group with a 2-1-0 record – including a 3-0 victory over host South Africa – Uruguay defeated South Korea and Ghana in the knockout stage before falling 3-2 to the Netherlands. In the third-place game, Germany came out on top 3-2.
For the ninth time in 12 World Cup appearances, Uruguay reached the knockout round. The country’s 2-0-1 record was good enough for a second-place finish in its group, but Uruguay lost 2-0 to Colombia in the Round of 16.
Uruguay finished runner-up to Brazil in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification with a 9-4-5 record. The country’s spot at the 2018 World Cup was secured on October 10, 2017.
