Houston WR Mumphery prepared to step up with Cecil Shorts hurt

With Houston wide receiver Cecil Shorts unlikely to play this week because of a separated shoulder, the Texans may turn to rookie wide receiver Keith Mumphery to help fill in.

Per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are debating whether to add another receiver in advance of the Thursday night game against the Indianapolis Colts or increase Mumphery's role in the offfense. The Texans also have other options on the roster in receivers Jaelen Strong and Chandler Worthy.

Mumphery, who caught a career-high four passes for 56 yards in Houston's blowout loss to the Texans, said he's prepared to take on an expanded workload.

“That’s my job to be ready whenever my number is called,” Mumphery said. “I think it’s time for me to step up and do what the team needs me to do. I feel a lot more confident and knowledgeable with the playbook and understanding what’s going on around me.

“The game is still fast, but you have to be more prepared. Preparation is the main key. The more prepared you are, the more success you’ll have.”

The Texans selected Mumphery in the fifth round of the 2015 draft out of Michigan State.
