Gronkowski says he'd choose a concussion over knee injury

Concussions are a huge problem in the NFL, but apparently not for Rob Gronkowski.

The New England Patriots tight end appeared on “Jim Rome on Showtime” on Wednesday, and it was entertaining, to say the least. But he also said something that might give Patriots fans a bit of a scare.

Rome asked Gronkowski if he’d rather blow out his knee or suffer a concussion. And as it turns out, brain damage doesn’t bother Gronk in the least bit.

“Uh, so if we’re sitting here, and I had to choose would I want a concussion right now or my knee blown out, I’m going to say a concussion,” Gronkowski said, per CBSSports.com. “Why would I want to sit there for eight months and not do anything, when with a concussion I’ll just wake up and I’ll be ready to go again?”

The possibility of memory loss isn’t a problem either because according to Gronkowski, “that happens all the time. I don’t even know how I got to my hotel last night.”

That’s not exactly how it works, Gronk.

Head injuries, especially if not treated properly, can lead to early retirement, long-lasting brain damage and even death. The most common knee injuries require routine surgery, and although the recovery can take an entire season, the knee generally ends up being as good as new. Just look at, well, Rob Gronkowski.

Someone should probably make sure Gronkowski has some extra padding in his helmet next season, though, just to be safe.
