Two of the NFL's best headlined a Week 16 matchup with playoff implications, as Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers defeated Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis Colts, 48-27, at Lucas Oil Stadium.

McCaffrey outdueled Taylor, who entered Monday Night Football ranked second in rushing yards (1,443), and Brock Purdy turned in a career-best effort to lead the Niners to a big win.

Purdy's performance gave him the edge in an intriguing quarterback battle against 44-year-old Philip Rivers, who played valiantly in his second game after a five-year retirement. The 49ers (11-4) secured a playoff berth Sunday and have now improved their chances at the No. 1 seed by beating a scrappy 8-7 Colts team that may end up missing the postseason.
