Dolphins agree to sign safety Marcus Maye, AP source says
The Miami Dolphins agreed to sign safety Marcus Maye on Monday, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.
Maye was released by New Orleans in a money-saving move in March after two seasons with the Saints. He had 97 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions for New Orleans.
Maye, the New York Jets' second-round pick out of Florida in 2017, had established himself as one of the most consistent performers at his position in his first five NFL seasons with the Jets. He has eight career interceptions, five forced fumbles and 4 1/2 sacks.
He had the longest interception return of the 2018 season when he picked off then-Denver quarterback Case Keenum’s pass in the end zone on the final play of the game and returned it 104 yards before being caught and tackled at the 1-yard line.
Maye missed three games last season while serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, stemming from his 2021 arrest in Florida on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol after his involvement in a car crash in Fort Lauderdale.
Maye is not the only safety piece the Dolphins have added this offseason. Miami signed former Bills safety Jordan Poyer to a one-year deal at the start of free agency in March.
