With Hunt on shelf, Bigfoot ready to move past possible rematch

Published Dec. 11, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

With Mark Hunt recovering from a broken hand, a rematch to 2013’s most recent Fight of the Year nominee seems unlikely anytime soon. Hunt broke his left hand in two places during the fierce five-round battle with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at last weekend’s UFC Fight Night event in Brisbane, Australia.

As a result, according to UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani, Silva’s camp doesn’t see any point in waiting for a rematch.

According to Helwani, It is Silva’s hope to get back into competition as soon as possible.

The Brazilian star walked away from the fray without any serious injuries, and indeed, FOX Sports spotted him briefly attending an impromptu after-party in the event’s host hotel hours after the event concluded.

After fighting to a draw with Hunt, Silva currently stands at No. 4 in the UFC’s rankings, four slots above the “Super Samoan,” who just cracked the top 10 and vaulted past both Frank Mir and Stipe Miocic in the process.

Meanwhile, Hunt is expected to miss at least the first half of 2014.
