Chile's Massu retires from tennis

Former Olympic champion Nicolas Massu of Chile has announced his retirement from professional tennis.

Massu broke down in tears Tuesday in an emotional news conference in the Chilean capital of Santiago.

The 33-year old player said he's proud that his children will know that he is ''part of the history'' of Chile after a 17-year professional career.

Massu reached a career-high ranking of No. 9 in 2004, the same year he won gold in both singles and doubles at the Athens Olympics.

Chile had never won a gold medal in any sport until Massu and Fernando Gonzalez won the doubles title.

At the end of Tuesday's news conference, he hung the medals around his neck and embraced his mother.
