The Russian Football Union has fined Zenit St. Petersburg $10,000 after one of its fans offered a banana to visiting Brazilian player Roberto Carlos.

The incident happened last month at a pre-match ceremony before Zenit played Roberto Carlos' Anzhi Makhachkala.

Zenit confirmed the fine in a statement on its website on Thursday. A few days after the incident, Zenit reportedly said the fan would be banned from the club's Petrovsky Stadium for life.

Roberto Carlos, a member of three Brazilian World Cup squads, transferred to the Russian team this year from Corinthians in Brazil.

In 2008, Zenit was fined $58,000 after its fans threw bananas and made monkey chants at three black Marseille players.
