UEFA says Bocanegra clear to play despite protest

UEFA says United States captain Carlos Bocanegra is cleared to play for his new club Rangers in a Europa League playoff, though it will study a protest about his eligibility lodged by opponent Maribor.

UEFA says the Scottish Football Association gave guarantees clearing Bocanegra to make his debut in a 2-1 loss in Slovenia last Thursday, the day after he joined Rangers from French club Saint-Etienne.

The U.S. defender then missed a Scottish league match on Saturday because he had not received his visa to work in Britain.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will study Maribor's protest into Bocanegra's playing status.
