Mark Hughes has been hired as manager of Queens Park Rangers, a team just one point above the relegation zone in its first season back in the Premier League.

The former Manchester City and Fulham manager was given a 2 1/2-year contract Tuesday, two days after Neil Warnock was fired.

''I'm fully aware of the challenge in the short and long term and I am genuinely excited about the ambition of the owners,'' Hughes said in a statement.

The former Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea forward was to take charge of his first training session on Tuesday afternoon, with his first match at Newcastle on Sunday.
