Portugal midfielder Raul Meireles handed in a transfer request at Premier League side Liverpool on Wednesday, shortly before the summer transfer window closed.

The 28-year-old Meireles, who only signed for the northwest club a year ago from FC Porto for ?14 million ($18 million), is currently sidelined with a collarbone injury but has been linked with a move to Chelsea, managed by Portuguese coach Andre Villas-Boas.

With Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish having strengthened his midfield with the signings of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing this summer, Meireles may find his first-team opportunities limited at Anfield this season.

So far, he has made two appearances in the league, one as a substitute when he came on against Arsenal to inspire Liverpool to a 2-0 victory at Emirates Stadium.

Meireles has three years left on his deal at Anfield.
